Show Notes:
A great show which got off to a shaky start, firstly because the band were scheduled to come on at 8pm and didn't take the stage until 8:45pm, by which time Wolfmother had been done for an hour and 15 minutes, and the 73,000+ strong crowd (2nd largest ever at the venue) was starting to grow restless. It certainly didn't help when a Spinal Tap moment occurred and 'Hello Sydney!' came out of the PA (bit like saying Hello New York in Boston!). That was quickly forgotten though when the opening riffs of It's So Easy came gushing out of the PA. Axl still has the voice, Slash still has all the cool guitar moves, and how can you go wrong when you bring out Angus Young to jam on 2 AC/DC songs.
I presume the encore was cut short due to an 11pm curfew and a late start time (not sure if it had anything to do with the requested police escort which was denied!), I presume The Seeker was cut, and apparently Patience was also on the setlist, but at 2 1/2 hours I don't think anyone was complaining. As it was the show ended at 11:15pm with a flurry of fireworks.
Recording Notes: Given the MCG is a sports ground and I had seats, I was unsure how it was going to sound both in the stadium and on the recording. I was even more worried after Wolfmother's set sounded horrible from my seat. While it wasn't the best sound ever, it was decent, miles better than poor Wolfmother's mix, and I'm sure if i'd been standing in front of the soundboard it would have sounded great. A pretty respectable crowd around me who kept the talking to a minimum (except for one bit of commentary about the roadie saying Hello Sydney before Better). The only thing I didn't record was the extra crowd cheering when the band came back on stage to take a bow. I'd switched off the recorder by that point, and no extra music was played. While not my best ever recording, it's certainly very listenable given the limitations of the venue and my recording position. Enjoy!
